People driving past the old IBM Country Club in the town of Union have been expressing concern about construction crews who have been working near the historic buildings.

Some long-time residents of the area have wondered if the flood-damaged structures are about to be torn down.

The work now underway won't affect the buildings which hold plenty of memories for thousands of people who participated in country club events when the property was owned by IBM.

The project involves the construction of a removable flood wall that can be put in place across Watson Boulevard when necessary.

Neal Gramento of G. DeVincentis and Sons Construction said excavation work at the site started last week.

A large hole has been opened up in front of the country club buildings just east of a closed pedestrian walkway. Utility lines will be relocated as part of the project.

The work will continue over the next several weeks. Traffic is moving through the construction zone, one direction at a time with the use of temporary signals.

Gramento said drivers should try to use other routes to avoid congestion and potential lengthy delays until the project is completed.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing some of the funding for the flood wall.
