The Union Endicott School District is informing residents through its weekly newsletter and direct correspondence that there has been a case of Pertussis, or whooping cough confirmed at the Jennie F. Snapp Middle School.

The notification to parents and guardians was sent out February 13.

Officials say the Broome County Health Department Communicable Disease Nurses have contacted individuals who were more likely to be exposed and have advised preventive treatment.

Parents are advised to watch their child for symptoms and contact their health care provider if a persistent or severe cough develops.

If whooping cough is suspected, the child should stay home until five days of an appropriate antibiotic is complete.

Pertussis is highly contagious and spread through the air by cough.
