The “almost annual” New York State Crappie Derby ice fishing contest will not be held the last Saturday of January as had been planned, but it’s not sunk yet.  Organizers have pushed back the date to February 13 with the hope of thicker ice.

A check of the ice on Whitney Point Reservoir the second week of January showed the ice far behind where it should be due to the warmer than normal winter.

The Crappie Derby Committee keeps an updated website for information on the status of the derby that draws anglers and spectators from all over the northeast.  The official website can be found at: www.crappiederby.com.
