The trouble with the water main near the post office on Henry Street was reported around 9 a.m. Monday.

Henry Street was closed to most traffic between Carroll and Fayette streets while water department workers were on the scene.

Access to the main post office was maintained, although the street could not be used by other vehicles.

Water service to several nearby buildings was shut off while the repairs were being made.

The six-inch steel line where the break occurred was buried about six feet beneath Henry Street.

The water main was reported back in service by 2:45 p.m. Monday.

Broken water lines become more common during the winter because of the freezing and thawing of the ground.
