A number of events in the Southern Tier commemorate Veterans Day.  This is a Federal Holiday with most  government offices closed.  Post offices and banks are also among those closed in observance of the holiday.

In Binghamton the annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 2:00 PM at American Legion Post 80 on Main Street.  In Endicott a parade will begin at 7:00 PM on Washington Avenue.  Also in Endicott a Veterans Day Memorial Service will be held at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street at 11 AM.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day on this date in 1919.  It marked the one year anniversary of the end of World War I.  In 1926 Congress passed a resolution to make the day an annual observance. In 1954 the official name of the holiday was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.   The day is a tribute to all veterans both living and dead and encompasses service in times of peace and war.
