Bob Joseph/WNBF News

A 54-year-old Vestal woman died this morning after she was found under the ice in the Susquehanna River near her home.

Authorities say Christine Mapes was pronounced dead at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Vestal police were called to Loretta Lane to investigate a report of a missing woman at 8:43 a.m.

Mapes was discovered trapped under ice in the river near the shore a few minutes later.

Firefighters and other emergency crews removed the woman from the water and transported her to the hospital.

Emergency room staff tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Vestal Police Department was assisted by Vestal EMS, the Vestal Fire Department and the Broome County Water Rescue Team.

Vestal police detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
