The Vestal Fire Department is clear to buy a new rescue truck.

Voters have approved spending $699,000 for the $675,000 truck and additional fees in a vote of 805-240.

In April, residents narrowly defeated a referendum calling for the spending of $800,000 for the new equipment.  That proposal failed by seven votes.

The new vehicle will replace a 27 year old truck that is wracked with rust and difficult to repair due to trouble finding the older parts.

The Vestal Volunteer Fire District serves around 28,000 residents along with businesses, the main campus of Binghamton University, medical offices and other commercial properties.
