Work is continuing on a multi-million dollar expansion of the town of Vestal rail trail.

The project to extend the walking trail west of Main Street could be completed by the end of the year. It's expected to cost nearly $3 million.

The Vestal town board has moved to borrow $225,000 for the project. The borrowing was authorized subject to a permissive referendum.

The trail's western line will add nearly two miles to the existing trail which runs east of Main Street.

The extension requires the construction of a bridge over Choconut Creek.

Crews using heavy equipment have been working to develop the western line over the past few weeks.
