A program to buy out more flood-damaged structures in Broome County is moving ahead.

The town of Vestal board has approved demolition work on a few properties targeted for acquisition under the federally-funded plan.

Almost 60 homes in the town ultimately are expected to be torn down. It's unclear when the current buyout program will be completed.

Vestal is one of several towns in Broome and Tioga counties working to finalize flood buyout programs.

Some property owners who have been seeking buyouts have expressed frustration about the complicated, lengthy process they're going through. But local officials say the buyout programs are progressing as quickly as possible given the requirements that must be met.
