Fire destroyed a Vestal church overnight May 18.

The fire at the Grace Lutheran Church was reported between 10 and 10:30 p.m. and crews responding to the scene said flames were shooting through the roof of the structure on Main Street near Hazel Street when they arrived at the scene.

Crews were still dousing hot spots at around 4 in the morning and New York State Electric and Gas disconnected utilities.

A witness on the scene speculated the building was a total loss.

A resident on nearby Hazel Street had reported hearing breaking glass and seeing the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were no injuries.
