The Candlewood Suites hotel is being built on the Vestal Parkway. The site had been occupied by the Plaza Diner.

Crews started to work on the 48,000-square-foot, four-story structure last August. Rebecca Lane of Gemini Construction Management in Binghamton said an average of between 75 and 100 people have been working at the site in recent weeks.

Lane said it's a "really busy, busy time" as the final phase of construction gets underway. She said the relatively mild and generally snow-free winter was helpful in keeping the project on schedule.

Maury Duffy, regional manager of operations and sales for the neighboring Homewood Suites by Hilton, said the new hotel is expected to open in late June.

Duffy said the official grand opening is scheduled for July 7. He said as of this week, more than $250,000 in advance bookings have been made for the Candlewood Suites facility.

Thomas Bedosky is the owner of the new hotel.
