Residents are being invited to “Shed the Meds” with a prescription take back event July 31 from 4-6 p.m. at the Waverly Free Library in Waverly.

People can also talk to New York State Senator Fred Akshar at a town hall meeting in the Village.

Unwanted and unused medications are widely linked to drug abuse when they fall into the wrong hands or damage to the environment when the drugs are disposed of improperly.  Over the past two years, medication collections in the 52nd New York State Senate District have collected over 900 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs worth an estimated $230,000 on the street.

In addition to the drug collection, officials with the Waverly Police Department, CASA-Trinity and the library are giving free training in the use of the overdose-reversal drug, Narcan at 5 p.m.  People can sign up for the training at Akshar.NYSenate.gov.

The “Facetime with Fred” town hall meeting with the senator will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Rail House Restaurant and Tap Room on Broad Street in Waverly.
