Weis Markets is planning to close two stores in the Binghamton area.

Weis officials announced  that the stores on Main Street in Binghamton and on Harry L. Drive in Johnson City will be closing.

79 full and part-time employees will be effected with many expected to transfer to other Weis locations.

That will leave 8 stores still open in Broome County.

Weis operates the largest number of grocery stores in a chain located in the area.

Price Chopper has three stores in Binghamton, Endicott and the Town of Chenango while Aldi operates stores on Upper Front Street in the town of Chenango and on Front Street in Westover.

The Weis store on Harry L. Drive that is marked for closure is located just yards from the Wegman’s Supermarket across from the Oakdale Mall.
