Three of the five RadioShack stores in Broome County are being closed after the company filed for bankruptcy.

Liquidation sales at the affected stores have been underway with signs indicating some items would be sold at up to 90 percent off the original selling price.

The local stores closing are in the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City; the Binghamton Plaza on State Street in Binghamton; and on the Vestal Parkway East in Vestal.

Shelves in those stores were nearly bare as customers took advantage of the deep discounts.

The two Broome County stores expected to stay open are in the Price Chopper Plaza on North Street in Endicott and in the Northgate Plaza on Front Street in the town of Chenango.

RadioShack last year closed about 20 percent of its stores in a cost-cutting move. Now, the company has announced it is shutting down 1784 more stores.

It's not known what will happen to the Binghamton-area RadioShack locations now being closed.

Local RadioShack managers and employees said they were not permitted to discuss the company's plans.
