Nearly $3 million in federal money has been allocated for pedestrian and traffic safety initiatives in the Binghamton area.

The funding has been announced by state officials for this year's highway safety improvement program.

The initiatives are designed to reduce traffic fatalities and severe injuries.

$2.7 million is being provided for pedestrian safety enhancements and a corridor study for Main Street on Binghamton's West Side. The projects will be designed to improve safety and traffic flow.

The state Department of Transportation will use $150,000 to study a five-mile section of the Vestal Parkway between Binghamton University and Main Street.

Traffic signal history and crash history will be analyzed to develop measures to improve safety and reduce congestion.
