Large commercial trucks have been ordered off sections of Interstate 81 and other upstate highways because of dangerous travel conditions.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the action late this afternoon.

According to the governor's office, The New York State Department of Transportation was banning tractor trailers on Interstate 81 from Exit 6 in the town of Chenango to Exit 31 in Brewerton.

Big rigs also were being ordered not to use Interstate 690 in Syracuse from Interstate 81 to the New York State Thruway.

In addition, tractor trailers were banned from Interstate 390 from the Thruway in Rochester to Interstate 86 in Steuben County.

The temporary bans were to start at 5 p.m. today. They were to be in effect through 6 a.m. Thursday, although the hours could be adjusted based on road conditions.

A statement released by Cuomo's office encouraged motorists to travel only if necessary.
