Libraries in the villages of Endicott and Johnson City will receive more support from local taxpayers with the approval of a revised funding plan.

Town of Union residents this week agreed to increase annual library support from $1.5 million to $1.7 million.

The proposition was approved by a 63 to 37 percent margin.

Andrea Tillinghast, director of Your Home Public Library in Johnson City, said she and others at the library were "ecstatic" with the vote. She said she appreciated the support the community is showing for what the library provides.

Ed Dunscombe, director of the George F. Johnson Memorial Library In Endicott, said he was pleased with the wide margin approving the additional funding.

Dunscombe said the proposition passed in each of the 39 election districts in the town of Union.

Dunscombe noted support for the funding hike was much stronger than in two similar votes in recent years.

Officials estimate the annual tax on a town of Union property assessed at $75,000 would rise by $5.31 under the new funding measure.
