Appraisal work should get underway for town of Union properties that are part of a flood buyout program.

The town board has authorized the appraisal process for 176 properties which have been approved for the process.

Funding for the buyout is coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Properties in several sections of the town of Union will be purchased under the buyout program. They're located in Endwell, West Corners, Fairmont Park and Westover.

After homes have been acquired, they'll be demolished. The properties then will have to remain undeveloped.

Similar buyout programs are underway in other Broome and Tioga county towns.
