Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]Authorities are investigating what caused a Marion, Indiana woman to crash into the end of a guide rail on Route 17 east in the area of Waterman Road at 6:17 a.m. June 10.

Tioga County Sheriff’s officials say 45 year old Janet Smith was trapped in the vehicle for an hour and a half before emergency crews were able to get her out. But a 12 year old passenger was standing outside the car when authorities arrived.

The sheriff’s office says other motorists, including an off-duty Johnson City Police Officer offered aid at the scene until emergency responders got there.

The crash closed lanes in both directions on the highway for several hours.

Both Smith and the child were taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment.  The woman reportedly suffered a broken arm while boy was kept at the hospital for observation.
