The Town of Maine wants a hamlet in its borders to be hooked up to natural gas service.

The Town has applied to the Broome County Small Community Fund for a $60,000 grant to help pay for a 12,000 gas line extension proposed by New York State Electric and Gas to run between Shadowbrook Road and Maine memorial Elementary School on Route 26.

Officials say the proposed gas line path runs along the sites of many retail, restaurant, storage and warehouse businesses as well as the elementary school.

The total cost of the project is being put at $950,000.

The Town’s application states the requested grant money would be used to reduce the surcharge for each customer connected to the natural gas line.  Maine officials say the municipality and residents have been trying for over a decade to have natural gas connected to the hamlet.

The application still needs to be approved by county’s Hotel-Motel Committee with a final resolution to be considered by the Broome County Legislature.
