Tioga County officials are looking over information gathered on substance use among young people in the county.

Data from a survey of six school districts and over one-thousand students has been presented to educators. Officials say the numbers will help them form programs to keep children away from drugs and alcohol and apply for funding to support those efforts.

Some of the information shared by the students in 8th, 10th and 12th grade found students starting to experiment with alcohol and other substances at a younger age.

In addition to the substance abuse issues, the survey looked for information on social interaction, including violence in the school environment.

The Prevention Needs Assessment Survey was taken last fall and are taken periodically. Tioga health officials anticipate another review this year.
