Police, fire medics and ambulances raced to a city-owned green space in downtown Binghamton to tend to three men who passed out after apparently using synthetic marijuana. The drug is known on the street as "spike."

The unconscious men were spotted sitting together in the lot at the corner of Court and State streets just before 3 p.m. August 21.

Authorities say ambulances from the city fire department, Superior Ambulance and Broome Volunteer Emergency Squad transported the men to Binghamton General Hospital.

The men are believed to have used spike while workers made final preparations for the Chris Thater Memorial Races which are to be held downtown this weekend.

Binghamton-area law enforcement agencies have reported a big increase in medical calls and arrests related to synthetic marijuana over the past several months.
