Apalachin assistant fire chief Brian Rieber said at least three people were home when the fire broke out. He said the residents and a dog were out of the house by the time firefighters arrived.

Rieber said three firefighters were treated for minor injuries and released.

The Apalachin fire department was assisted by units from Campville, Vestal and West Corners. About 50 firefighters battled the blaze. They were on the scene for more than five hours.

Rieber said Tioga County fire investigators determined the blaze was linked to an electrical problem. The fire originated in the rear of the house.

The house and an attached garage sustained heavy damage. A car in the garage was destroyed.

Rieber said those displaced by the fire were being assisted by relatives.
