One person is confirmed dead after fire broke out in a three story apartment building on Baker Street in Johnson City early February 16.  Another person was reported injured.

Authorities say 26 year old Sarah Wenzinger was removed from the building at 71 Baker Street and transported to Wilson Hospital where she died.

Village police say an autopsy revealed Wenzinger died due to smoke inhalation.

A 38 year old man escaped the fire but suffered injuries and was transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for treatment.

Fire and ambulance crews responded to the blaze before 2 a.m. between Main Street and Corliss Avenue and found the majority of the building appeared to be fully involved.

Flames could be seen shooting from the roof for over a  half hour.

Fire rigs from Johnson City, Vestal, Binghamton, Endicott, Endwell and Prospect Terrace could all be seen on location with police units from Johnson City, Binghamton and Broome County Sheriff's Office assisting as well.

Residents say they were awakened by authorities to have vehicles moved into driveways and onto the sidewalks to make way for the big rigs on the snow-choked streets.

The cause of the fire is undetermined but initially had been believed to have started in a kitchen.  The investigation is continuing.
