More than 12,000 New York State Electric and Gas customers were without electric service early this afternoon.

The utility reported 12,635 customers were affected by outages. Most were in Westchester County, where almost 4,000 had no electric service.

As of 3 p.m., 25 customers in Broome County were without electricity. Those affected customers were in the town of Windsor.

118 customers in Delaware County were without power, as were 312 NYSEG customers in Chenango County.

The number of outages was expected to continuing rising as powerful winds from Sandy affect most of New York and surrounding states.

A National Weather Service high wind warning is to remain in effect until five o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
