1927 — Walter Hagen won his fourth straight PGA championship — all in match play format — when he defeated Joe Turnesa at Cedar Country Club in Dallas, Tex. (More info.)

1971 — The Los Angeles Lakers started a record 33-game winning streak by beating the Baltimore Bullets, 110-106, at the Forum. (More info.)

1982 — The New Jersey Nets defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 99-91, giving the Ohio team a then NBA-record 24th consecutive loss over two seasons. The Cavaliers broke their own record by losing 26 straight games in the 2010–2011 season. (More info.)

1994 — George Foreman, 45, knocked out undefeated Michael Moorer in the 10th round of their fight in Las Vegas and won the heavyweight title. (More info.)

2002 — Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks won the National League’s Cy Young Award for the fourth straight season. (More info.)

2011 — Former Penn State University football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested on 40 criminal counts relating to sexual abuse of children over more than a decade. (More info.)
