Caution is being urged around area waterways as some melting has been going on over the past few days and that includes a warning to pet owners who live or walk their dogs near bodies of water to keep tight control of their pets.

Rescue crews in Tompkins County March 10 launched a boat to pluck a dog from water at Tunkhannock Falls State Park.  The owner of Sadie, the Border Collie mix, says she slipped her collar chasing a duck and quickly fell through thin ice.

It took fire crews a few hours to get the shivering pooch back to shore and her owner.

The incident, however, served as a serious warning to residents of the spring dangers around waterways, both still waters like ponds and lakes and, especially moving bodies of water like creeks and rivers.

People should stay away from all waterways since the ice is very unstable.
