Volunteers at The Story Garden, located next to the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier in Binghamton are getting down and dirty this week, starting to dig in the garden in preparation for the Spring growing season.Speaking on the April 6th edition of the local, weekly public affairs program, The Southern Tier Close Up, Story Garden supervisor, Nancy Hargrave and Weeders and Readers program developer, Adina Pasquale talked with host, Kathy Whyte about the unique facility that encourages children to read as well as instilling appreciation for the environment and gardening.

Hargrave says the Binghamton garden is the only one in the country with individual themed sections linked to specific children's stories. Each section even includes laminated storybooks for children to read.

The new Weeders and Readers program also brings adults into the act by having volunteers interact with the children and read to them.

Hargrave and Pasquale also talk about the upcoming Spring Fling... Sowing the seeds dinner dance to benefit the Story Garden.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
