It’s a big day for Democrats in New York State as voters head to the polls for a heated contest for the party nomination for Governor.

Incumbent Andrew Cuomo has been leading challenger, actress and activist Cynthia Nixon in the polls.  Nixon has said polls don’t matter, citing recent primary upsets around the nation.

Democratic candidates for State Attorney General are also on the primary ballot.

Law professor Zephyr Teachout, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, New York City activist Letitia James and former advisor to Hillary Clinton, Leecia Eve are all looking for the party’s nomination to fill New York’s top law enforcement job that was put up for grabs when Eric Sneiderman resigned under allegations of physically abusinging several women.

Polls are open from noon until 9 p.m.

A big local primary contest is in the Town of Union where Rick Materese and Frank Palmisano are looking for the Democratic Party’s nod in the race for Supervisor.

On the Republican side, Kenneth Del Bianco, a former Commissioner of Public Works, is facing Town Board member Frank Bertoni in the Supervisor’s contest.

Both sides are looking to replace current Supervisor Rose Sotak, a Republican, who chose not to run following legal spats with Town employees and the board.

In the Town of Fenton, candidates for Town Supervisor and Council are looking for a change in the wake of months of raucous meetings and lawsuits centering around plans for a natural gas transfer station.  Gary Slocum and Bill Bowie are looking for the GOP nod for Supervisor. Three candidates have their sights set on two council seats.
