Whitney Point resident Sharon Ball is running for the New York State Senate. But she's still getting her campaign together because she decided to seek the 52nd District seat only a few weeks ago.

Ball served as the executive director for the Broome County Arts Council for more than a decade before she retired last year. She's also a former broadcast journalist who has long been interested in government and politics.

In an interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now, Ball discussed what prompted her to run for office. She's the Democratic candidate challenging Republican Fred Akshar. The Republican was elected in a special election last November after Senator Thomas Libous was expelled when he was convicted for lying to federal agents.
