Most people have heard of the Civil Air Patrol, but just what do they do?Speaking on the Southern Tier Close Up, airing March 2nd on WNBF, Lt. Colonel Bill Schafer and Cadet Master Sergeant Jacob Klieger talk about the rich history of the C.A.P. starting with chasing Nazi submarines off the coast of the eastern United States during World War Two to assisting following modern disasters like Hurricane Sandy and searching for missing persons.

Cadet Master Sergeant Klieger, who is 15 years old, joined the Civil Air Patrol out of his love of airplanes and desire to fly.

Lt. Colonel Schafer says while the group has many young cadets, there are opportunities for adults, too.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
