The Almost Annual Great New York State Crappie Derbie ice-fishing tournament scheduled for February 9th on Whitney Point Lake is not going to happen. The Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation has determined there is not enough ice thickness on the reservoir to safely hold the trounament, which has been known to draw thousands of anglers and spectators from several states to northern Broome County.

In the 40 years of the tournament, it's been called off ten times, five in the last ten years.

Organizers are hoping next year will be colder and the ice will former earlier on the lake. Next year's tournament is tentatively scheduled for January 25th.
