The driver of a tractor trailer loaded with potatoes that tipped over on Route 17 East at the Tioga County/ Broome County line early in the morning on December 28th told authorities he fell asleep at the wheel.

Erronious televised reports put the time of the crash as 9 a.m. but the truck actually left the road and rolled, spilling its load at 2:38 a.m.

Thousands of pounds of loose spuds, that had been destined for the Frito Lay plant in Kirkwood, spilled along the side of the highway and had to be scooped up by a backhoe into a large dumpster.

The driver, William May of Gillett, Pennsylvania was not hurt but was ticketed for speeding and moving from a lane unsafely
