Authorities said Souza, a freshman engineering student, had been stabbed repeatedly in an attack that happened in Windham Hall around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police responded after the stabbing was reported. Souza was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he was pronounced dead.

State police and forest rangers assisted university police in searching for evidence on the campus during much of the day on Monday.

Faughnan said while there now is no "active threat" to the campus, additional police patrols were to be maintained overnight.

Investigators have not discussed a possible motive in the killing.
