Thousands of NYSEG customers in the Southern Tier lost electric service Wednesday afternoon as strong thunderstorms moved through the region.

As of early afternoon, more than 1500 Broome County utility customers were without power. The hardest hit areas included the town of Fenton with 838 customers without service and the village of Port Dickinson with 249 customers lacking electricity.

In Tioga County, nearly 2,000 customers were reported without service. Outages were reported in the towns of Owego, Tioga, Spencer, Barton and Candor.

The Spencer-VanEtten school district dismissed students at 1:15 p.m. because of the power outage. The district also announced there would be no after-school activities Wednesday.

Trees were reported down in some areas. In the town of Kirkwood, downed trees blocked sections of Old State Road and Fox Hollow Road.
