People who sign up to be part of a statewide disaster volunteer network this month will get a free disaster preparedness kit.

The first 300 new skilled volunteers need to create a profile before August 31 and submit it to officials with the Southern Tier Regional Volunteer Center.

After filling out the form and completing the skills profiles, volunteers will be mailed the kit that includes an emergency poncho, light stick, blanket, hand warmers, emergency drinking water, vinyl gloves, first aid kit, face mask, sanitizing wipes and other items.

Participants will be registered in a database to be notified in times of disaster of volunteer opportunities in their area.

The region involves eight counties ranging from Delaware to Steuben, Schuyler, Tompkins and also includes, Broome, Chenango, Tioga and other counties in the region.
