The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council says it has 33 projects in its portfolio in the competition for a $500 million award from New York State.

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul was on hand September 1 to hear the progress of the work of the council in the competition.

Three out of seven upstate communities will be awarded pieces of a total $30 million set aside to help promote economic development.

The Southern Tier projects being touted include the development of the Binghamton University School of Pharmacy in Johnson City, a state-of-the art health and education center in Corning, the relocation of National Pipe and Plastic headquarters from Vestal to Endicott, expansion of Bates Troy and expansion of Ithaca Beer in Tompkins County.

Another meeting of the panel is expected mid September, leading up to an October 5 application deadline.
