Smoke Results in Evacuation of Binghamton Temple

Binghamton firefighters used fans to clear smoke from the Temple Concord building on the city's West Side.

The fire department was called to 9 Riverside Drive at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Authorities say light smoke spread throughout the building. The smoke was generated after the air conditioning system was turned on in preparation for a scheduled event.

Fire department officials say three basement units associated with the building's heating and air conditioning systems were shut down.

Rabbi Barbara Goldman-Wartell said there was no damage to the facility.

According to fire department officials, there was one person in the building at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

A maintenance company was called to inspect the air conditioning and ventilation equipment to determine what caused the problem.

Riverside Drive between Front and Oak streets was closed while fire department units were on the scene. The detour caused traffic congestion on Main and Leroy streets for nearly an hour.
