The old structure on Hall Street at Conklin Avenue had been used for decades as a trucking garage by Crowley Milk, which operated a processing plant just west of the site. It was constructed in 1944.

The Humane Society acquired the site in late 2013. The organization has been raising money to build the new shelter.

The new facility will be located a couple of blocks away from the current shelter on Jackson Street.

Fundraising coordinator Kimberly Broderick said about $900,000 has been raised for the project. The capital campaign goal is $1.2 million.

The new shelter will be about twice as large as the current facility.

Humane Society officials hope construction can start sometime this summer. If things go as planned, the new facility could be put into operation early next year.
