Binghamton police are searching for a gunman who opened fire in a residential neighborhood, striking a pedestrian, a house and a vehicle.

Authorities say the shooting happened around 9:10 p.m. Monday on the East Side.

Investigators say a man jumped from a sport utility vehicle on Bigelow Street between Wilcox Street and French Court. He walked over to a 27-year-old man who was standing in the front yard of a home.

The assailant fired several shots. One shot hit the other man in the buttocks. Other shots struck the house and a vehicle.

The shooter then ran back to the SUV, which was last seen racing north on Bigelow Street.

Detectives say the house and the vehicle that were hit by shots were not associated with the man who was wounded. He was treated at a hospital.

The shooting scene is a few blocks away from East Middle School and about 150 yards south of Interstate 81.

Investigators believe the man who was shot had been targeted.

People with information about the shooting may contact the Binghamton police detective bureau at 607.772.7080.
