Former New York State Senator Thomas Libous of Binghamton is asking a judge for leniency when he is to be sentenced next month on one felony conviction for lying to the FBI.

Libous wrote a letter to U.S. District Judge Vincent Briccetti asking for mercy when considering the sentence as the former Senate Deputy Majority Leader is dying from terminal prostate cancer.

Besides pointing to his deteriorating health condition, Libous maintained he never directed money or work to Anthony Mangone of Santangelo Randazzo and Mangone in exchange for a job for his son, Matthew at the Westchester law firm or to an Albany lobbiest.

Dozens of other appeals have been sent to Judge Briccetti on Libous’ behalf, including from the Republican’s wife who said she wanted to hold her husband in her arms as he died and pleaded the Judge not to take that away from her.

Libous was to have been sentenced October 30, but that was delayed until November 24 since the long-time Binghamton politician is due to have another round of chemotherapy starting on the 28th.

Libous faces up to five years in prison.
