New York State Senator Thomas Libous’ son has been convicted of three counts concerning income tax fraud allegations and cleared of the more serious charge of obstructing the IRS.

Attorney, 37 year old Matthew Libous was found guilty in Federal Court of three counts of subscribing to false tax returns while he was acquitted of the more serious count of obstructing the IRS.  He could be sentenced to up to nine years in prison.

Meanwhile, the elder Libous, the Republican Deputy Senate Majority Leader from Binghamton, is facing his own legal trouble.  He’s accused of using his influence to land his son a job with a now defunct Westchester County law firm.

Senator Libous is waiting for his trial on one count on an allegation of making false statements to the FBI.

Sentencing for the younger Libous is set for April 29 in Federal Court in White Plains.
