Some Downtown Binghamton workers will soon have designated parking spots, freeing up some of the public parking.

Under the Regional Economic Development Council’s grants announced December 11, 2-million dollars has been designated to help fund the construction of a new parking garage for the Security Mutual building.

Company officials say the project obviously benefits the building’s employees but will also be a big help in addressing the parking shortage downtown with hundreds of public parking spots being opened up.

The parking issue downtown has grown over the years as more and more residential space has been developed and continues to be developed, much of it in the form of student housing.

The City is studying all the current issues and possible ways to address the problem.
