The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a secret shopper scam.

Authorities say over the past several days, they have received numerous complaints about a mystery/secret shopper scheme where people are getting packages or envelopes containing fraudulent checks along with instructions for the victim to cash the check at their bank, keep a portion of the money for their fee and return the rest to someone, usually at an overseas address.

Residents who play along could be charged for the amount of the cashed, bogus check and the banks also face bookkeeping and other problems.

Sheriff David Harder says if you are not familiar with the sender or unsure if the promotion is a scam, contact the Sheriff’s Office at (607) 778-1911.
