On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, when many were thinking about football and winter sports, the Binghamton University Baseball Team was working out in front of a number of professional scouts at Varsity Field.  Head Coach Tim Sinicki and his staff arrange this showcase every fall for their players.  BU has had eight players drafted by Major League baseball teams. The most recent player drafted was outfielder Jake Thomas who was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 27th round this June.

Scouts watch as the players are put through their paces.  Outfielders make throws to home plate, infielders show their arm strength with throws across the infield and position players are timed in the 60-yard dash.  Hitters are watched carefully for bat speed and pitchers are checked with the radar gun for velocity.

Virtually all of the players have already been scouted by someone from professional baseball in high school, summer leagues or in college.  The showcase gives players the chance perform and show their skills in front of scouts who may not have seen them before.
