Cortland County Sheriff’s officials say a call to check on the welfare of a child resulted in the temporary lockdown of a school in the City of Cortland and the death of a suspect.

Officials say they were looking for a man in the Marathon area January 17 and he was eventually seen driving in Virgil.

Deputies followed him to the City of Cortland in the neighborhood of the Barry School, which was placed on lockdown for a few minutes.

Officials eventually stopped the vehicle on Delaware Avenue and the man shot himself to death.

No other details are being made available.

There were no incidents at the school.
