Approximately 80 runners took part in today's Run For Your Heart 5K held at the Vestal Rail Trail. The run began and ended at the Coal House located on the west end of the Rail Trail.

The overall winner was Brendan Bialy from Vestal with a time of 19:15.  He ran for the Reality Check team.  The top female runner and second overall finisher was Cassondra Hamilton from Harpursville representing the Triple Cities Runners Club.  Her time was 19:38.

The event attracted runners of various age groups.  One of the most impressive performances was turned in by 76 year-old Richard Modafferi.  His time was 23:45.  Numerous awards were given to top finishers in a number of age groups.

Today's Run For Your Heart 5K is held as part of the spring fund-raising events calendar of the American Heart Association.  This upcoming Saturday, May 3rd,  the 25th Anniversary Heart Walk will be held.  The event will be held at Binghamton University with registration beginning at 8 AM and the walk scheduled to begin at 10 AM.  Proceeds from both events will go to benefit the American Heart Association helping fund research, treatment and education.  Anyone interested in participating can go online at SouthernTierHeartWalk.org to register and get additional information.
