Hillel Academy will be temporarily relocated after the roof of Temple Israel on  Clubhouse Road in Vestal collapsed Sunday night.

Authorities responded to the temple at around 11:30 when an alarm activated.  No one was in the building at the time.

The roof fell into the social room, breaking through the main floor and sending rubble into the basement.

Construction crews are evaluating the building's structural integrity, but temple officials say it may be a year before repairs are complete.

The library and main sanctuary were spared damage but most of the other parts of the building, which was built in 1967, sustained some degree of damage.

Temple officials were able to retrieve the Torahs from two sanctuaries and secure them in a safe location.

Authorities have not officially listed a cause of the collapse but the recent heavy snow is suspected.
