Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]Drivers on Binghamton's West Side should expect detours over the next six months as reconstruction work on Riverside Drive gets underway.

Crews from G. DeVincentis and Son began the first phase of the project last July. The initial phase involved the replacement of water and sewer lines, along with curbs, between Front and Beethoven streets.

As work on the first phase concludes, Riverside Drive between Murray and Chapin streets will be closed to traffic. The detour for that block is expected to be in place through April 24.

A top coat of asphalt is to be applied next month on the eastern portion of Riverside Drive.

The second phase of the street reconstruction project - between Beethoven Street and the Johnson City line - is expected to start in a few weeks.

City officials say the total cost of the Riverside Drive improvements will be about $5.4 million.
