While the Twin Tiers have been seeing an uptick in the number of fires recently, apparently resulting from improperly trying to thaw frozen pipes, authorities say cooking fires still top the list of incidents.

February 25, Endwell fire officials responded to a blaze that apparently began on Taft Avenue in a basement when an outdoor turkey cooker was being used inside and the grease caught fire.

The first firefighters on the scene were able to quickly put out the blaze before it caused much damage.

The person and animals inside the residence were not hurt

Binghamton fire crews quickly put out a grease fire on Fayette Street, also February 25, that started as residents were cooking dinner.

Officials say one person was hurt trying to put out the grease fire with water.

Authorities say the residents also apparently tried to push the stove down a back staircase.

Remember, never use water to put out a grease fire, it just spreads the flames.  If a fire extinguisher is not available, baking soda can be poured on the fire. It does take a lot of baking soda, however.  If you safely can, place the cover on the pot to rob the fire of oxygen.  Call 911 for help and do not try to pick up the flaming pot and move it.
